What is  truth ? Truth is unchanging,  enduring , transcendent  trustworthiness. Today, I am going to lay out a biblical case for the existence and value of truth.

Jesus & Me in the Psalms / Truth; Scripture; God: Faithfulness

Psalm 119:137–144 KJV

137 TZADDI. Righteous art thou, O Lord, and upright are thy judgments. 138 Thy testimonies that thou hast commanded are righteous And very faithful. 139 My zeal hath consumed me, Because mine enemies have forgotten thy words. 140 Thy word is very pure: Therefore thy servant loveth it. 141 I am small and despised: Yet do not I forget thy precepts. 142 Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, And thy law is the truth. 143 Trouble and anguish have taken hold on me: Yet thy commandments are my delights. 144 The righteousness of thy testimonies is everlasting: Give me understanding, and I shall live.

Today, I am going to lay out a biblical case for the existence and value of truth.

As we begin, please notice with me a connection in these verses with the character of God and the word of God.

Understand the word of God is not limited to the revealed and written Scripture.

It also includes whatever God says or decrees at any time.

Psalm 119:137 KJV

137 TZADDI. Righteous art thou, O Lord, and upright are thy judgments.

Straight, level right judgments

Psalm 119:138 KJV

138 Thy testimonies that thou hast commanded are righteous And very faithful.

Psalm 119:140 KJV

140 Thy word is very pure: Therefore thy servant loveth it.

Tried, tested word

Psalm 119:142 KJV

142 Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, And thy law is the truth.

the truth!

Psalm 119:144 KJV

144 The righteousness of thy testimonies is everlasting: Give me understanding, and I shall live.

Psalm 119 declares God’s word as truth.

Psalm 119:30 KJV

30 I have chosen the way of truth: Thy judgments have I laid before me.

Psalm 119:151 KJV

151 Thou art near, O Lord; And all thy commandments are truth.

Psalm 119:160 KJV

160 Thy word is true from the beginning: And every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.

What is  truth ?

Truth is unchanging,  enduring , transcendent  trustworthiness .

“emet(h)”: Constant, unchanging, faithful, steadfast, dependable, reliable, eternal

Exclusive, not dependent on context

Utterly reliable and enduring, not merely a fact

Linked to the unchanging character of God

Truth is settled. It is not in a research and development stage.

Psalm 119:89 KJV

89 LAMED. For ever, O Lord, Thy word is settled in heaven.

Truth originates from  God .

History’s most significant philosophers have tried to explain the existence of truth without the existence of God, and they have failed:

Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Locke, Kant, Hegel, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Marx, James, and others

It is not a social construct, dogma, personal preference, or a set of surprisingly consistent chances.

The existence of truth as we experience it demands an intelligent, personal, good, eternal, unchanging, all-powerful, supernatural being as its source.

Psalm 43:3 KJV

3 O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; Let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles.

Psalm 57:10 KJV

10 For thy mercy is great unto the heavens, And thy truth unto the clouds.

Jeremiah 10:10 KJV

10 But the Lord is the true God, He is the living God, and an everlasting king: At his wrath the earth shall tremble, And the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.

2 Timothy 2:13 KJV

13 If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.

God the  Father

Deuteronomy 32:4 KJV

4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: For all his ways are judgment: A God of truth and without iniquity, Just and right is he.

Psalm 146:6 KJV

6 Which made heaven, and earth, The sea, and all that therein is: Which keepeth truth for ever:

God the  Son

John 1:1–3 KJV

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

John 1:14 KJV

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

John 14:6 KJV

6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

John 17:5 KJV

5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

1 John 5:20 KJV

20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

Hebrews 13:8 KJV

8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

Colossians 1:15–17 KJV

15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

Revelation 1:8 KJV

8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

God the  Holy   Spirit

John 14:16–17 KJV

16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

John 15:26 KJV

26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

 God’s   Word  is truth.

His creation, commands, laws, and promises

Numbers 23:19 KJV

19 God is not a man, that he should lie; Neither the son of man, that he should repent: Hath he said, and shall he not do it? Or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

Hebrews 11:3 KJV

3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

By God’s word, all things were created. Our reality came into existence by God’s word.

Titus 1:2 KJV

2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

Isaiah 55:11 KJV

11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: It shall not return unto me void, But it shall accomplish that which I please, And it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

Matthew 5:18 KJV

18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

Mark 13:31 KJV

31 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

The words of God exist eternally.

It is staggering how much evidence we have that the written Scriptures we have are a reliable account of God’s revealed words to us.

Psalm 119:89 KJV

89 LAMED. For ever, O Lord, Thy word is settled in heaven.

Unchanging and beyond our natural reality of space, time, and matter.

1 Peter 1:23 KJV

23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

God’s eternal word is involved in making us eternal.

2 Timothy 3:16–17 KJV

16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

God’s inspired word is sufficient.

John 17:17 KJV

17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

Truth sanctifies.

Unfortunately, truth and faithfulness alike are largely devalued in our modern world.

Isaiah 59:14–15 KJV

14 And judgment is turned away backward, And justice standeth afar off: For truth is fallen in the street, And equity cannot enter. 15 Yea, truth faileth; And he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey: And the Lord saw it, and it displeased him That there was no judgment.

It’s nothing new!

Humanity rebels against truth; therefore, humanity rebels against God.

What if there were no truth?

There would be no eternal, unchanging  God .

(and visa versa)

There would be no trustworthy laws of  nature .

(gravity, motion, gas, mathematics, argumentation, etc.)

There would be no objective  morality .

All morals would be subjective.

Such things as murder, adultery, and stealing would not be objectively wrong.

Today, agendas to promote such wrongs as abortion and sexual promiscuity stem from the denial of the existence of God.

No God, no objective morals.

There would be no assurance of  anything .

Sun tomorrow?

Cash flow/budget? (math)

Job tomorrow? (no concept of truth)

Fair prices?

Eternal life/heaven?

Since there is truth, what should we  do ?

(Found over 26 ways to use God’s word in Ps. 119.)

 Seek  it

read, ask, listen, pray

Psalm 119:2 KJV

2 Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, And that seek him with the whole heart.

 Prove  it

study, question, debate, test, observe

(pure metals will stand the fire)

49 ZAIN. Remember the word unto thy servant, Upon which thou hast caused me to hope.

God’s word will stand any tests you give it.

Examine God’s word and know it will examine you.

 Believe  it

Have faith, or trust, based on reliable, yet  limited , evidence that reveals itself to be  trustworthy  .

Romans 4:20–21 KJV

20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.

Romans 8:24–25 KJV

24 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? 25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.

Ecclesiastes 12:8–14 KJV

8 Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity. 9 And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs. 10 The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth. 11 The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd. 12 And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh. 13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. 14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

Romans 1:18–20 KJV

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; 19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

 Keep  it

guard, protect, and obey

 Declare  it

with your lips and your life

13 With my lips have I declared All the judgments of thy mouth.

Romans 1:16 KJV

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

The whole truth!

ILL–we don’t take orders for meals in our home, and neither does God with His truth.

Rejoice to know truth exists.

It exists from God and His Word.

 Seek ,  prove ,  believe ,  keep , and  declare  God’s truth.
